VERY EARLY METAL CREST OR PLAQUE SECURED TO A HARDWOOD WOODEN BACKING WITH KEYHOLE KEEP PLATE TO THE REAR
The biggest and most well known of all shipping lines P & O began in 1815. It was then known as the PENINSULAR LINE OF STEAM PACKETS. (The peninsular part refers to the Iberian Peninsula). In 1837 it renamed itself and became the PENINSULAR STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY. Finally in 1840 it once again changed its identity and called itself PENINSULAR AND ORIENTAL STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY. P&O has had a long history of buying out its competitors.
The oldest crest is the rising sun with the Latin inscription ‘Quis Separabit’, meaning ‘who will separate us’ (circa 1860- 1870) followed by a version with the rising sun with letters ‘PO” ( 1890’s-1920’s). £50
